CLOCK PERFECT

5-12-23

It was cooler this morning with the Sun shining and only a super thin cloud deck filtering the rays. Mineral Basin was opened, which offered White Diamonds and other lines being nicely prepared. It was perfect right out of the chute on that side of the hill, but the front was just going to break shortly behind that. It was a matter of staying just ahead of the clock all morning long. Sorbet perfection was happening when the pack hit the sweet spot, letting you dial in full platform engagement on every turn. What a treat. Twin Peaks was open during a short window, and some very lucky folks got to hit it with perfect conditions.

Olivia and the guys on their way to the Twins. So many possibilities.
Olivia claiming her successful descent of Pipeline. She is one stoked lady!!

The Woodward Park was open and buffed to perfection out in Mineral Basin. The kids were throwing down big time. Impressive moves in the air.

Huge features offer an ultimate air time experience. With the warm temps, the landings were soft and silky.

Tomorrow, look for more great Spring conditions on all sides of the hill. When the pack breaks, the off trail is excellent and fairly smooth, with only marginal static to affect the ride. The break should be a bit earlier as it was today, so be on deck for the best of the day. Speed Safely!!

FAST BREAK

5-11-23

There was a freeze overnight, with just a hint of light precipitation, which left a bit of velvet on the surface of things. Early Trams offered quite firm lines, but the Grooming effort was very consistent, and had some tenderized sections that helped with the traction. I took an early Forklift stop to let softening occur. It did not take long at all for the pack to break, offering that sorbet window that let you dial in those dial-o-matic turns.

Team Center of Gravity stoked to be on the peak this morning, with First Chair Brian photo bombing the shot.

After the break in the pack, it was not long until it morphed into the Shlurpie stage, but the higher elevation pitches were offering lines that made staying up high advantageous. Tomorrow, look for Mineral Basin to be in the mix, which promises to have some big mountain smooth lines waiting. With the South and East facing aspects back there, the break should be right and ready for the opening bell. I think the Woodward Park might be open, so look for some folks throwing down out there. See you there for the Spring delights. Keep it tight!!

FLAT LIGHT

5-10-23

A high cloud deck hung over the Front, creating a very flat light day. With all the cloud cover, there was just a light freeze, which broke early and provided a soft and silky feel. The grooming crew did a great job of making the consistency smooth and predictable with the lack of detail the light produced. Tenderized lines helped on the very early morning laps. Traffic was light and back to back Trams were easy to make.

The High North aspects are full and fat wall to wall. Spring lines are smooth, with some static and sun cups.

As the day progressed, the Sun kind of burned through the cloud deck, adding needed detail. Tomorrow, look for more great Spring conditions, with a short sorbet window that is worth being on deck to dial in. IBBY!!!

EARLIER BREAK

5-09-23

It was a balmy morning, with bright Sun, still air, and firm lines for the morning session. A light dusting had been left on the hill, which added just a hint of traction on the smooth lines. A big shout out to the Grooming Crew for making such consistent carpets to dial in. When those carpets break, they are just insanely silky and smooth. Around 11AM the break began, offering the amazing sorbet hour that lets you dial in that full platform engagement, which makes you feel like you can do no wrong. As the pack broke, the off trail got very nice, with the static and rumble easily negotiated with a deliberate approach.

The Road To Provo was offering some amazing lines after Noon, which smooth carpets of AHHHH top to bottom.
We have all known each other for over 45 years. Time flies when you are having fun.

Tomorrow, look for more smooth lines on the hill, with, perhaps, the same time frame for the break. Of course, that all hinges on weather it is overcast in the AM. Clouds are in the forecast, but I am holding my visualizations for another sunny start. Traffic is light, and walk on Trams are happening back to back. Great to max out the vertical. A leisurely start to the day is no problem, with the break happening around 11 to 12:30PM, after which the pack gets rather sticky. Keep it tight!!

SPRING FUN

5-08-23

It was a fun Spring day, with a fair overnight freeze, excellent industrial smoothing efforts, and excellent visibility thanks to clear skies and Sunshine. The opening hour was very crispy, but by 9AM, a bit of softening was beginning to add some silky traction to the mat. There was light traffic, and back to back Trams were easy to make. By 11:00AM, the break was on and so began the sorbet hour, which offered consistency that made each turn a full platform engagement experience. Some nice tenderizing had been done, so, even with the firm early pack, there was some tooth to the mat that let you keep things in check.

Spring goodness, with the upper mountain looking fat and smooth.
The Morning Crew assessing the options. Which way will we go!!

Tomorrow, look for a similar break as today, with perhaps a dusting with any passing impulse that sneaks by. Expect light traffic as well, so max vertical will be easy to dial in. That big break should be in the 11 AM window. Straight Ahead!!

FRESH FROSTING

5-07-23

There was about 3″ of fresh frosting on the dance floor to begin today’s festivities. Temps were cool, but the air was still. There were clouds as the day opened, but the Sun burned through the cloud deck, which offered very nice visibility and excellent detail. Mineral Basin was looking very nice, but I opted to hit the front side and take advantage of the vacant lines and smooth, steep, preparations which were waiting and I was glad I did. There was very light traffic, so back to back Trams were easy to make and dial in those untracked lines that had a firm surface. Off trail was a tad crispy, with the light cover, and a deliberated consistent turn was mandatory to keep the variations in line.

Wynonna and I put down these tracks 11 years ago today and this cover was just like today’s offerings.

Clouds moved in and out from time to time, making the visibility variable, but there was plenty of clarity to keep the focus on the fall line sharp. By Noon, the Spring rays began to affect the fresh cover, and it began to become manky and sticky. Care was needed to keep from going over the handle bars on the lower elevations.

Harry Caston and Kiffer Crevling at the elbow on Regulator, enjoying the Spring quite and high mountain air. Harry is the Father of Marcus Caston, internationally known skier.

Tomorrow, look for more machine worked lines on all sides of the hill. I expect there to be some small accumulation overnight as impulses are still pumping through the Valley as I write this. Temps. are still cool, so expect a hard freeze and time your arrival accordingly. There is a very short window of the best feel, so use the clock to stay ahead of the break. Enjoy the MOMENT!!

UNSETTLED FLOW

5-06-23

The morning was bright and sunny when I stepped outside The Trailer and looked up at the peaks to see them shrouded with clouds. The temps up high were cool, with a peak temp of 19 Degrees, signaling a full on freeze. A few inches of fresh accumulation was delivered, giving plenty of traction and a silky feel to the pack, but firmness was fully in effect for the morning session.

Kevin sent this shot of his tracks down his first run down Chips.

From the looks of these tracks, it was a very nice way to start the day, despite the variability of the visibility. Traffic was quite light with walk on Trams going off and the Woodward Park was happening in the Mineral basin. A great line up of apres music was happening on the plaza later in the day and the Spring celebration was nice way to soak some up the vibe. Tomorrow, look for more unsettled weather, with continued afternoon stormage. There may be some residual clouds hanging on the peak as it did today, but I think some more accumulation may be anticipated with all this thunder storm activity this afternoon. We’ll see now it shakes out. The pack is still quite smooth overall, but the Groomers will be offering the smoothest lines. See you there for the continuation of an epic season. IBBY!!!

COOLER TEMPS

5-05-23

A few inches of fresh essence was deposited on the hill overnight as the temps were much cooler, with the core of the Low getting closer to the Front. The clouds hung low over the hill, making the visibility variable for much of the day. There were windows of clarity as clouds moved through, but the break was going to take a very long time for sure. I bailed on the day due to the visibility issues and the frozen surfaces that would have to be negotiated by braille. Jake sent some shots he took of the Woodward Park which has been completed and in use for the competitions. It is truly amazing, with impeccable grooming and attention to detail.

Massive features have been carved out of the insane pack that we have, which have been turned into formidable elements.
Another angle to give you some sense of scale. Huge!!
Attention to detail is evident in every aspect of this park. These talented folks pull out all the stops and display a great commitment to quality.

Thanks Jake for sending these shots, as the scene was a tad more obscure with today’s visibility. Tomorrow, look for more variable visibility as the core of the Low moves in and expect some precipitation during the day. Be sure to get out to Mineral and get an up close and personal look at what this team has built. Impressive indeed. Colder temps will be happening overnight, so I expect significant freeze of the pack, which will make for some very crispy sliding in the AM. There may well be some additional accumulation as the impulses keep moving up out of the South. There will be quite a line up of musical talent on the Plaza, so be sure to stick around for the line up. Stay Frosty!!

CORN GOODNESS

5-04-23

A lucky patch of Sunny clearing started out the day, and with the balmy temps, which still has a bit of cool to it, made the pack break right out of the Chute. Mineral Basin was offering the goods when the Tram opened at 8, but the front side was just breaking around 9. The Front side felt like smooth back country corn, which made every turn feel luxurious and silky. Lower on the mountain, the break was making the thin crust a tad punchable, but a light touch kept you on the top, but a hard edge set would send you through the crust. Regulator was feeling very nice at Noon, as it had a nice silky feel and a very smooth firm surface.

The Trailer made it through another Winter in fine style. A bit of TLC will be needed before heading for the High Desert.

Showers began rolling in around 1 PM. with clouds and flat light making visibility go South. Tomorrow, look for more stormy conditions as the Low Pressure moves closer and send continuous bands of moisture. Temps are predicted to drop as the Low passes, so the pack might get firmer. I’ll be watching the Bird Site in the AM for a better handle on the day. The Goodness of Maize!!!!

APPROACHING WEATHER

5-03-23

After a long stretch of very warm temps that have kept the Canyon closed, a window has opened, and we will be able to access the hill in the AM. However, weather is approaching with that Low sitting off the coast that is pumping moisture into the front from the South. With that flow, it will be interesting to see what transpires up at the higher altitudes. Intel from the hill informs me that the lack of traffic has left the pack very smooth wall to wall.

A look out at Little Cloud looking smooth and very tempting.
Jeff and Bill are my inside intel source as they have been dialing in the mountain almost by themselves for days.

Tomorrow, look for somewhat lower temps, with weather in the forecast as the Low begins to move East. I think it will be good to go right from the start in the AM, but visibility may be a tad dodgy. They may well be trying to hold that event out in Mineral Basin, but we’ll have to see how that shakes out. It will be great to be back up on the hill. Remain Standing!!!
