HUGE ACCUMULATION

1-11-23

The Front has received a huge accumulation of high density product for the last stretch of time and it has been epic. Massive efforts have been made by all the folks who are behind the huge job to keep the situation under control. A big shout out to all of the Teams who have worked so hard to get on top of such a massive amount of snow. Today, the road opened later in the afternoon and a couple of chairs were able to spin for the last hours of the day. After watching some of the videos of the slide activity, the reality of the magnitude of this event is really brought home.

Wynonna’s Snow Angel blesses these times and the times that are coming.

Tomorrow, look for a let up in the stormage, with some clearing for the next couple of days. Expect continued mitigation efforts to be ongoing they get a handle on this event. There is more weather in the near future, so get ready and enjoy the short window of calm. See you for these epic times. Keep it tight!!

GETTIN’ READY

1-10-23

There was a delayed Canyon opening this morning as well as a delay for the hill to open as mitigation teams worked hard to get a handle on the overnight accumulation. There was great wind buffed product on tap for the folks that made it up today, with smooth lines on all sides of the hill. The wind was high and that kept the lines fresh and fun, with that billiard table velvet feel underfoot.

Pierr Fallone working the fluff from the accumulation the other day. He came a very long way to get the goods and he got them good!!

There is a major Wall Of Voodoo working it’s way across the Valley as I write this, which will be delivering another heapin’ helpin’ as it unleashes on the The Front. Expect delays in the AM once again as this push is even bigger than yesterday’s delivery. There is more upstream yet and big indications still over the Pacific. Yikes. What a cycle. Stay Frosty.

IT BEGINS

1-09-23

The beginning of this stream of weather moved in with wind and snow in the higher elevations. The wind has been working the pack the past few days and has smoothed the surfaces. Knowing the aspects that held the wind buffed was key today in the very difficult visibility. The high moisture content of the last installment left a very consistent supportable velvet feel that was really a treat. Staying close to the trees aided in the reference department, but trusting the billiard table smooth surface was a real plus.

An important ZEN concept

The Tram was placed on a wind hold as the winds really kicked in later in the morning. The snow began to really fill in and it has begun and will continue through the night. I expect it to back off for the morning, so there might be a brief window before the next impulse moves in. Remember the smooth lines as they will still have held up with the lighter traffic. Dress for continued storm riding and keep the trees in sight. Remain Standing!!!

WIND WORK

1-08-23

The Faithful made a strong and early push for the goods this morning, as the wind worked the pack ahead of the next atmospheric river that has taken aim on The Front. There was a high cloud deck with some very interesting formations in the flow as the Sun back lit the wind effects. Mineral Basin opened with lots of lines to find all around the bowls.

Kyle sent this great shot of a Lenticular formation out in Mineral Basin before the lights went out.

As the day wore on, the clouds thickened up and the visibility went flat for the duration. The wind kept the pitches smoothing, keeping the feel fresh.

Pierr Fallone up close and personal under Hanging Bowl yesterday and finding it fresh and fun.

Tomorrow, look for continued wind as the impulses begin coming in for the next few days. It will be a good day to get a look at the hill for consistent lines and smoothed out possibilities. The push for the goods will be a bit lighter, but I will be getting there early to insure a parking spot. This will be another very interesting cycle. Get ready for a deep dive into the season’s offerings.

Tram Rat sent this amazing Sunset shot from his Winter getaway spot in Tuscon AZ. We all miss him at the Breakfast Table.

See you tomorrow for the wind buffed lines and velvet feel. IBBY!!!

FULL VISION

1-07-23

It was a full vision day after all those days of stormage, revealing all the details in high definition. The Faithful were staged and ready for the Canyon opening and were stoked to get after a real Utah Powder day. The conditions were story book great on all aspects and there was plenty to go around, with Mineral Basin opening for the first time in a while.

Mikey M getting the goods with the Sun lighting up the scene.
Diamond Dave getting after it out on Baldy.
Professor Tom getting the high edge angles in the carvelicious Essence.

Tomorrow, look for more great conditions to be on tap, with some cloudy skies as a weak impulse passes over in advance of another Low Pressure trough up stream. There is more goodness waiting in the wings, so we’ll have to see if these areas open. Time will tell. I expect continued high traffic with the demand for what has been delivered. It is going to be great. Syrup Won’t Stop ‘EM!!!

FREE REFILLS

1-06-23

The Faithful were in full attendance early this morning and were treated to a full free refill storm riding day, with plenty of snowing and blowing to keep things fresh and fun all day long. The added bonus was an 11AM closure of the Canyon for mitigation efforts, leaving those who made it up there the ones to enjoy the rarity of the occasion. The snow quality was great and, with the wind that had been blowing, provided smooth lines that were available on all aspects.

Direct drive rewards Tomi with a deep blast of the goods.

These shots speak for themselves, and if you were there today, you know. Tomorrow, look for clearing skies, plenty of great powder to find as areas begin to open. The hill still holds that overall smooth complexion, which still exists wall to wall. The Groomers will be offering excellent carving that will feature that full platform engagement feel. The stoke is high, so get your share. Stay Frosty!!

STORM WARNINGS

1-05-23

The wind was howling this morning as I left The Trailer, signaling the approach of another storm on the door step. The Tram was down with the high winds, but the chairs were loading on time for The Faithful who were in attendance for the day. I took refuge in The Forklift Restaurant to assess the options. The groomers had been prepared and were offering smooth lines, with plenty of fallen pine needles in the mat to provide good reference to the ground features. The carving was easy on the smooth mats and that made for fast top to bottom laps.

A mystical look into Mineral Basin yesterday. I was waiting for one of those rare Sun Lighting Effects.

Snow began falling later in the day and the wind continued as the impulse moved in. Tomorrow, look for accumulation to have been delivered overnight with continued accumulation during the day. With the wind that was pumping today, I expect many of the favored aspects to have been smoothed with the transported snow. With those smoothing features, I think there will be some very nice turning in the AM. Expect a storm day and dress for the conditions. The flow continues, and the hill just keeps getting better and better. Straight Ahead!!!

SUN SHINE

1-04-23

The Sun was shining this morning letting us get a good look at the hill and a look into the new areas that have yet to open. The Faithful were in full attendance again today but the lifts moved them up the hill, so there was minimal waiting. The Groomers offered the smoothest lines of the day with the off trail still tricky and challenging. There is plenty of soft snow to keep the edge control easy and sure.

Mikey M sent this shot getting a look into Mineral Basin. Looks tempting.
Another look at what is waiting in the wings I took as the Sun really did a nice job of painting the scene.

Tomorrow, look for more good conditions, with sections still waiting that will be really fun. More weather is in the forecast, so expect some visibility issues to be a factor. Dress for weather, and look for the smooth lines. There is plenty of cover wall to wall, so go with confidence. Keep an eye out for openings. Roundness is KEY!!

DIFFICULT VISIBILITY

1-03-23

The Faithful were in full attendance early this morning and were ready to get after it as the hill had 5 or 6″ of fresh light density Essence on top of the higher density product from previous days. With the difficult visibility I was staying close to the trees to keep the references going and finding the deep pockets.

Peter Hughes finding the deep pockets and making the best of the visibility in Hanging Bowl.
GOLD Wing “FLASH” hitting V1 and pulling back on the stick out on Baldy when it opened.

New sections of the hill opened as mitigation efforts progressed, which offered deep sections of smooth, with the explosive layer of light density that gave things that blower feel. There was a very crusty stubstrate that the new accumulation did little to dampen, so finding the more untracked lines paid dividends. Traffic was brisk, but the chairs made short work of the pressure and got folks up the hill quickly. Tomorrow, look for a little bit of residual accumulation with the last flurries dropping that ultra light dust. There is more waiting in the wings but the visibility will still be variable. The prepared lines will be offering the best consistency in the variable vis. Keep it tight!!

FIRST LOOK

1-02-23

With all this snow having fallen in short order, the Mt Ops teams did a heroic job of getting some of the hill open for The Faithful who were taking advantage of the final opening of the Canyon. This snow was quite high density, but offered a floaty and buoyant feel. The visibility was at premium with foggy conditions and staying close to the trees was a must to keep reference.

Mikey M drilling the fall line and keeping his speed up on Baldy.
Mark Harath staying close to the trees and keeping his stance solid in the higher density product.

Tomorrow, look for some additional accumulation as the impulses push back out of the East. It will only amount to a few inches, but anything we get on top of what has been received is icing on the cake. Expect The Faithful to be in full attendance, and more of the hill to be opening slowly as mitigation efforts proceed. Visibility will remain an issue, so keep the trees in sight for proximity and pitch reference. What a great start to the New Year. Speed Safely!!!
