LAST DAYS

5-09-26

The morning temp was cool and the pack had frozen solid overnight. Mineral Basin was offering the first softening with the Sun shining and a light wind blowing, keeping the break slow to occur. The front of the hill was very firm, however, some tenderizing passes had been employed on the main run. The lower third of the hill was difficult to negotiate as the melt off had worked the pack, so some route finding was in order. The exit on the Gad side of the hill was in pretty good shape, but there was mandatory walking on the Bass Highway to span the gap in cover. The break went off around 11 AM, when those nicely prepared lines softened and the sorbet stage in the pack made the turning smooth and dialable.

The Powder Mafia was on deck today for the annual Running Of The ELVI. This great tradition is always a treat to see with full flair and stoke on the hill for the last days.

Tomorrow, look for more nice turning for The Last Day of the season. Coverage remains good, but be aware of thin spots and narrow threads you may need to use caution. The Gad side of the hill has the best egress line to get to the base, but walking the gap in the cover is mandatory still. The break on the pack should be the same as today, so plan accordingly. Stay Frosty!!!

GREAT WEEKEND

5-03-26

It was a great weekend of skiing, with some epic Spring corn, powder, and sorbet to let you dial in your favorite aspects. Mineral Basin was offering amazing lines of smooth supportable wonder that let you feel each turn as a distinct NOW moment. The mountain crews did a great job building up the exit access that let you trust the pack as it offered some very nice quality lines.

Peter Nicholson finding perfect corn goodness out on a Lewis and Clark sojourn, hitting Corncob Hill at the perfect time. Priceless.

It was great driving with the top down, nice soft lines as the pack broke around 11:30 AM. clocking around the dial giving a large choice of aspect top to bottom. Great music was happening on the Plaza deck that was party central when the day wrapped up. Next weekend will be the last of the season and I feel confident that the Mountain Crew will put together another solid miracle of snow farming. It has been a great season with some really memorable days, full of the deep, smooth, and rare times. We got some excellent dumps just when we needed it and, even though it was low in total accumulation, it did not lack in quality. See you next weekend for the wrap up session!!! Syrup Won’t Stop ‘EM!!!

SPRING GIFT

5-01-26

After a week of letting the hill get a rest from traffic, and the grooming crews getting a chance to farm the snow pack on the thin sections of the hill, combined with the foot of fresh snow from last weekend, turned the pack into a Spring gift for The Faithful who were on deck. With a stout freeze overnight, and early Sun shining, Mineral Basin was offering back country perfect surfaces on many aspects. White Diamonds had been prepared, offering smooth, steep corduroy that called for repeated laps. The more East facing aspects were hitting the perfect sorbet stage at 8:30 AM, which also were back country smooth and dialable. Traffic was fairly light for the early hours, and great turnarounds were happening. The North East aspects were offering actual powder where the Sun had yet to morph the pack. On the Front side of the hill, the freeze was on and it was going to take until 11 AM for a real break to happen. Finally around Noon, the West facing aspects came on, offering sorbet goodness. What a treat.

A fresh late spring coating on the hill put a whole new light on the pack. Smooth back country quality was happening on many aspects.

Tomorrow, look for a similar timing for the goods. Follow the Sun and stay with the break as it clocks around the dial. The coverage remains good on the hill, with the lower elevations still navigable, but more caution is needed on the tight lines.

Alta photographer Galen Schuck with a Mountain Chickadee eating out of his hand over at the bird feeder at Alta the other day. Totally in tune with Nature pays dividends. Priceless!!

Expect that front side of the hill to be quite crispy in the AM, with Mineral offering the first soft lines of the day. Great music and fun on the Plaza Deck apres ski, and plenty of Sun to work up the Tan. Stay Frosty!!!
